As the landlord of The Dragon's Lair and leader of The Black Dragons Motorcycle Club, Axel Carmichael has seen it all and done it all. He's a respected and experienced dom. Nothing shocks him anymore, and nobody catches him off guard.
When Bayden rides up to The Dragon's Lair on a bike worth more than most men earn in a year, and immediately demonstrates that he has far more attitude than sense, it's easy for Axel to write him off as a silly little rich boy who's about to get himself killed.
But, there's more to Bayden than meets the eye. He's no silly little boy, rich or otherwise, and werewolves aren't easy to kill.

This is a fabulous book! I stayed up way too late 2 nights in a row to finish it and resented the fact that real life was getting in the way of my reading. I cannot think of enough superlatives to describe this book; it is my new favorite.I loved both of the MC"s and grew to appreciate most of the secondary characters as well (so glad this is book 1 in a new series). The book showcases both Axel and Bayden's point of view seamlessly and just made me love them both even more. This is a stand alone novel with no cliff hangers(I always like knowing whether the story will end or not). Even though this is an almost 600 page book, I was disappointed when it ended(not by the ending itself,I just didn't want the journey to end).
I am sorry to say that, if shifter's did exist, the world Ms. Dare created would probably be right on the mark. Human's have, down through history(and still today), exhibited an "us verses them" mentality; with the "Us" group always able to justify whatever they have done to the "them" group. Werewolves are firmly in the "them"group with no rights and no recourse in human law to protect them; Bayden has lived his whole life knowing he (and his kind) are considered lesser beings. It is heartbreaking to see how human's have devastated werewolf society and deluded themselves about the reality of their actions. As with most conquered people, the history books reflect the winners point of view and most humans have either excepted the conventional view of wolves or thought the "pack laws" a thing of the past( like Axel). But, as in real life, there have always been shining examples of people who look passed the conventional viewpoint and refused to defend the indefensible actions and beliefs of their own kind; Axel is a shining light and I loved him.
Bayden is doing the best he can in an almost impossible situation, refusing to let human's break him but still so damaged by his life time of abuse that it is difficult for him to trust a human. He is submissive to Axel and desperately wants to please him and he makes several missteps trying to be more like a human thinking that is what Axel wants. I loved Bayden and my heart hurt for him. This book is not filled with stereotypes and cardboard cutout characters but beings who seem real(and ones I would like to meet).
This is not a BDSM sex story, it is a romance in the finest sense of the word. Yes, there is sex in the story but it is not the main focus of the
story;the relationship is the focus and it is wonderful.
If you like Shifter/human stories, M/M love stories with some BDSM and leather thrown in for good measure, and strong, believable main characters you won't go wrong by buying this book.
I intend to read it again( I just finished it last night) maybe even today because l loved the story that much.

Axel Pup (Audible Audio Edition) Kim Dare Chris Clog Audible Studios Books Reviews
I have always enjoyed Kim's writing style and looked forward to her next book. I remember noticing that she hadn't released as many books as quickly as normal lately. I had begun to think that something might be wrong. I have never been so glad to be wrong. She has the ability to really bring a story to life through detail that is mostly left out of other stories, especially ones about bdsm. Her characters never go into a situation and act differently than you would expect. You always know when they do something wrong and want to groan with them, or cheer when they do something wonderful. Having read every title of hers I can get my hand on (about 50) has only made me anticipate every new story she writes even more. This book had it been a stand alone would have been her opus. It is everything that I always wished when I read her shorter works and was sad when they ended so fast.
This story takes the time to really evaluate what makes a D/s relationship work. How do you build trust? Using two very different cultures trying to navigate through the different ways they view dominance as a way of showing how important communication is was exceptional. I've seen it tried before but rarely done so well.
Set in a time where there was fighting between wolves and humans and now wolves basically have no rights was also interesting. I always enjoy seeing what new ways authors have of changing the werewolf or shifter dynamic. Jennifer Ashley does it with her shifter unbound series as well.
Axel is a biker alpha male who owns a pub. Bayden is a wolf who doesn't want any trouble. He just wants to fight to make enough money to pay his and his family's rent. The attraction is evident from the start. The slow slide into the D/s relationship was very fulfilling. It felt like just the right pace for the characters. Through the complication the Anti-pack laws cause, to Bayden's misunderstanding of human behavior, every step forward is hard fought by both men and written with great appreciation for the struggle.
If you haven't read kim before and aren't sure about the price try any of her short stories that cost a bit less. I suggest the Rawling's men series or the For The Attention Of serial. Any book you read though will give you a good understanding of if you like her style. I for one can't imagine you wouldn't. This book was fantastic and I couldn't put it down
I have followed Kim Dare for a long time now and I have to point out this is not the first book where she mixes werewolf romance with BDSM that was first done nicely in the Pack Discipline series.
Now to talk about this book...
The characters are given the space to be fully explored and Kim does rock in making sure you were interested in what was going on between Axel and Bayden right from the start. Both characters seemed overly skittish and standoffish but still you were rooting for them. The world building is also excellent treating werewolves as an oppressed and highly restricted minority plagued by government and societal abuse. Humans are not the good guys here.
BUT... this book should still be romantic and erotic right? In my opinion I think the earlier Pack Discipline series is better at being short sweet and getting to the point while maintaining some heat. It's not any one thing that goes wrong in this book it's something about mixing the whole werewolf romance stuff (Which is the best part!) with BDSM in a more realistic contemporary setting that just comes across as overstuffed and at times repetitive for no reason... it's too many things in the soup and some things don't necessarily go together or help the story or need to be repeated as often as they are. I still love the world Kim has created here and I loved the characters and yes I think you should read this book if you like werewolf romance.
It is still a treat, just not the best one in Kim has made.
